Which Are The Most Common Lucid Dreaming Techniques?

There are a lot of different methods on how to induce a lucid dream, and if you talk to people who do it regularly you’ll understand that there are a lot of different variations of each of the techniques we’ll be mentioning bellow.

Even though there are a wide variety of different methods, there are two major categories: you can either recognize a sign (also called a dream cue) in your dream or you can enter the dream directly. These categories are called DILD (for Dream Induced Lucid Dream) and WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream). Let’s take a look at each of those with more detail.

First Category Of Lucid Dreaming Techniques: DILD

This is the most common happening and the one that it is recommended for those who are starting to learn the ropes is the DILD. Basically, you’ll have a certain sign in your dream that could come naturally or through a reality check. These events happen while you’re sleeping and within a dream. We can divide them in:

  • Traditional DILD – In this method, which is also the most popular one among learners, you’ll only need to recognize a clue that tells them that they are dreaming. For this particular technique to be effective, those doing it will need to have a good level of awareness, something that not everyone will be able to do. This sense of awareness is tested because you’ll need to identify the clues that you’re given in the dream.
  • MILD (Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream) – Using the MILD technique, you’ll try to make sure that the dreamer remembers to do a reality check when within the dream. Remember the beeping watch that was covered on our home page? In here, the same thing happens: it’s the repetition that will help you remember that you need to do those regular reality checks.
  • WBTB (Wake Back to Bed) – While this isn’t a full-blown method in on itself, it’s a great way of complementing the other DILD methods. This is based on the fact that our dreams are based on our thoughts. If you think about having a lucid dream right before a REM cycle, the chances of being able to lucid dream are much improved. In fact, many people had their first lucidity experience with this method.
  • CAT (Cycle Adjustment Technique) – This is a bit of a more complex method, as you’ll need to completely reprogram your own internal clock, which can be rather hard. You’ll need a lot of discipline and a very regular sleep pattern to be able to do this.

The WILD – Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams

This is slightly different technique that will focus on getting you inside a lucid dream directly from a waking state. You’ll basically need to trick the body into thinking that you’re in fact sleeping. As soon as you’re able to do so, the brain will start to create the entire dream as it would normally do but you’ll be completely conscious throughout the whole time.

The trick is to lie down without moving for the necessary period of time to fall asleep while still maintaining their mind fully awake. This is a more complex technique and one that’ll require a very strong mental discipline to be able to complete.

It has a small variation on the DEILD (Dream Exit Induced Lucid Dream), which uses the fact that even after we wake up our mind still remains in the world of dreams for a few moments. This specific technique can only be used in those who are able to know that they have awakened from the dream immediately after waking up.
